Two Questions

I have two questions for you all since you are brilliant and knowledgable. First, can you explain SEO to me? I see it all the time, but I’m not sure what exactly it is. One reason I ask is because in my blog posting is an option for the all in one SEO pack that allows me to put in a title, description, and keywords. I recognize that this is important for making me visible on the web, but really, I have no idea what I should be doing in any category. Also, I see jobs out there that as for SEO, and I’d like to be able to tell my students what that means, particularly in reference to tech editing. Because I’m clueless. If you know of a website where I could read and learn more, let me know.

Second question: My choice of editing buttons on my blog posting is extremely limited. Like about 10 things. It’s extremely limited. I tried adding a plugin to extend it, but it didn’t take at all. It’s called UltimateTineMCE. I’m not sure if it was what I wanted, or how i didn’t get it working. It is activated. Can anybody give me an idea about what to do?

Thanks!

SOE is search engine something. You put in your keywords (words that go with your post like funny or cats) and title to allow someone to find your post through google etc.
    Not 100% sure though

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

My understanding that it means to choose how you phrase things on a website with an eye toward what words and phrases people search for.

SEO is search engine optimization. The concept is predicated on the idea that if you know how search engines like Google work, you can improve the chances that searchers will find your site. For example, assume you’re writing about walruses. Google weights where a word occurs, so putting the word walrus inside a tag will give it more weight than just putting it in a paragraph. And of course, there are metadata tags (almost like index entries) that are also highly weighted by search engines even though you don’t see that data when you go to the page. That’s a very simplistic explanation, and the real problem with relying on SEO is everyone is using it, too.

Argh! Sorry, I was in a hurry and I forgot that you can’t type an actual tag into an html form. That should be “putting the word walrus inside a <head> tag will give it more weight” . . .
