Stepping Out

I’ve been actively attempting to be, oh, active. I’m starting smaller with just making sure I get so many steps each day with no breaks. I set the count a little low (5K) to make sure I can hit it fairly easily. Working a sedentary job means that I often forget to get up and move. My main goal is to do this every day with no breaking the chain. I’m up to 18 days. My feet and calves and shins are a little bit sore. I need to work on stretching. I keep not doing that. But I’ve been feeling fairly energetic. Pretty pleased with that.  I’ve had a few days where I’ve pushed the workout a little bit more, but the main importance is to a) get in the minimum and b) every day. Once I’m not hurting so much and feeling pretty good about it, I’ll push the minimum up.

I got to meet a Swedish Vallhund puppy today. So cute. It’s pretty much a wolf-colored corgi. And so sweet. He was four months old. I didn’t have my boys with me. Wish I had. I took pictures, but they didn’t turn out so well, but here’s a quick picture. I’ve heard of them before but never seen one in the fur, so to speak. He was adorable and so very sweet.

In the meantime, I’m revising books. I’m hoping to have announcements soon. Oh! but I do have one. I’ve a Horngate short story coming out in August in an anthology. It’s got stories by Seanan Mcguire, Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, Faith Hunter, and lots more.  The anthology is called Urban Enemies, and I’m going to have a copy to give away soon (of an ARC). Keep an eye on this blog and my newsletter for details. If you want to preorder, click here or on the cover:

We’ve also been out digging for petrified wood and finding some really great pieces. Going to be going out and doing more of it soon. The last time we went, a guy found a piece of carnelian limb cast. It was amazingly clear carnelian and it was shaped like a slice of wood. I can’t wait to go back and see what we can find. My husband found this one cool piece that was a little round piece of a limb. It had rotted in little columns through the wood and then those holes filled with agate. The outside is petrified wood. I’m really excited about seeing it polished. That’s something we hope to learn to do this summer. There’s a local rock and gem club we’ve been meaning to join and they offer access to equipment at a low price.

I also want to go hiking around Silver Falls State Park, and to the Tamolitch blue pool on the Mackenzie river. It’s beautiful.

Basically I want to get outside and get moving more. I like to, but I can’t seem to get over entropy sometimes. Which is completely annoying about me. Sigh.

Rocks and dogs

We went rockhounding yesterday. Got up at 5:30 and got on the road. Went to look for moss agate, but there was a gate up, so went to search for limb cast instead. I had a rotten day and found very little, but the Boy of Size and my husband found lots of good stuff. We were going to stay the night and do more looking for thundereggs, but the boy started feeling sick with my death cold and we decided it was better to come home so he could rest and not be sick for school on Monday. Today I’m so tired. The drive home was rough. There was a lot of snow, and though the road was mostly just wet and the truck is a 4×4, it was still about 11 ish before we got home last night (got up at 5:30).

Today I’m sore. I climbed hills and dug. And my chest and throat hurts from panting. With the cold and the sudden elevation, plus exercise, I had a tough time. So I went slow and rested frequently. It was a lovely day. A bit windy and some chill, but bright and beautiful. Also, and here’s a TMI, my butt bones hurt from sitting on rocks where I had to go to the bathroom. One of the dogs stayed near the truck the whole time, the other one followed me everywhere and laid down between my feet every time I

I’m trying to work on finishing a story for an anthology that I owe. I had a plan for the end, but now I’m thinking maybe I want to find something twistier. So I think that’s what I’m going to do. At least try. See what I can figure out.

Body hurts

Friday the kids had the day off from school and so the man took the day off and we went to central Oregon to look for limb cast. Those are agates formed when hot ash covers wood after a volcanic eruption. The wood disappears and leaves a void and over time, minerals filter in and create a limb cast. It looks from the outside like petrified wood, but instead of minerals replacing the wood and leaving rings and so on, they are simply molds of the wood that was there. Anyhow, we went looking. We found a lot of little pieces about the size of my thumb, and a lot of smaller chips. Then the man found a Y branch about four inches across. It’s pretty blue. Then later he found a really big piece about five inches long and maybe four across. It’s lovely. limb cast 2 limb cast 1 There’s a lot of blue and purple in them. We hope to go back another time and look in some other spots for other colors. limb cast 4I love rocks, but don’t really know what I’m doing as far as hunting them. So the fact that a month or so ago we found some really cool obsidian and this weekend we found these limb casts was really exciting. We’ve got books and stuff, but I just didn’t know if we’d be able to find anything or that we’d know were to look or what we were looking at.

So Friday was a seriously long day, and then yesterday we went in the opposite direction to the coast and walked along the beach. The day was a little rainy, but then it cleared up for awhile and the waves were lovely and I walked around 5 miles with the doggies. I picked up a few shells and we went to a place called the Crystal Wizard and I got a really cool celestite geode egg and a lovely piece of black tourmaline. I’d like a piece of watermelon tourmaline, but they didn’t have any. We ate lunch/dinner at the Pig-N-Pancake and got home and I collapsed into a puddle.

Somewhere in all that, I tworked my back in a particular spot that tends to annoy me and now it hurt. Dammit. Worst part is that I think I did it sleeping rather than doing anything fun.

The dogs are exhausted by all the traveling in the last couple of days. When we were hunting rocks, we let them out of the truck off leash and they followed us for a bit, then Viggo kept running back to the truck. Voodoo followed me from shade to shade. Then when we went back to the truck to drop stuff off and head up a hill, they jumped inside like they thought we were going to sneak away without them. Goofy beasts.

Today I’ve done laundry and attempted to do some cleaning. Got the replacement mat for under my desk. The old one didn’t hold up. They sent me a replacement that is much heavier duty, so hoping it works better.

In the meantime, I’ve done a couple of minor changes to the website–notice the bar up at the top is now where the menu is. The reason is that I’m writing more and the old menu didn’t leave a lot of options for adding more stuff.

I’m hoping to do more with my newsletter. I kind of stink at thinking what might be nice to include in that. I don’t suppose anybody out there has suggestions of what they’d like to see?
